Roman Kramsztyk was born in Warsaw in 1885 to a wealthy Jewish family. His grandfather was the Reform rabbi Izaak Kramsztyk. He studied at Kraków Academy of Fine Arts (1903-1904) under the artist Józef Mehoffer, and at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts (1904-1908) under the artist Johann Caspar Herterich. From 1909 he lived intermittently in Paris and in Poland. Kramsztyk's works were displayed in many exhibitions in Poland and outside it, including in Paris, Berlin, Venice, London, New York, and Moscow. In 1914, his works were displayed in an exhibition of the New Secession in Berlin alongside works by Henri Matisse, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Max Liebermann. During the interwar period, he was active in artistic life in Poland and in Paris. In 1922, he was a cofounder of the Rytm Association of Polish Artists.
When World War II broke out, Kramsztyk was living in Poland, and in 1940 he was imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto. Even though he was offered an escape from the ghetto, he chose to remain there, devoting his time to painting, using his works to document the lives of the Jews in the ghettos and the atrocities of the Nazi occupation. Kramsztyk was murdered in 1942 during the deportations from the Warsaw Ghetto to Treblinka.

A large-format travelogue documenting the journey of Baron Louis Nicolas Philippe Auguste de Forbin to Near Eastern countries – starting in Greece, along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, throughout Palestine, and finally to Egypt. The first part of the book describes de Forbin’s journey, and the second contains 70 lithographs after the paintings of many artists, eight aquatints after watercolor drawings by de Forbin, and two engravings depicting the architectural plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and sketches of the Great Pyramid in Giza, archaeological artifacts, and the Catacombs of Milos.
According to Jacques Charles Brunet, the book was printed in 325 copies.
The engravings and lithographs depict antiquities, landscapes and scenes from everyday life in the cities and various sites throughout the East: holy sites and inhabitants in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Acre, Jaffa, Ashkelon and Gaza; the pyramids and other antiquities in Egypt; sites in Athens, Constantinople, Alexandria and Cairo; and more. The lithographs, by Godfroy Engelmann, were prepared after paintings by Carle Vernet, Émile Jean-Horace Vernet, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Claude Thiénon, Jean-Pierre Granger, and others. The aquatints were prepared by Philibert-Louis Debucourt.
Baron Louis Nicolas Philippe Auguste de Forbin (1779-1841), a neo-Classical painter by training, was appointed Director-General of the Louvre Museum in 1816. Soon afterward, in 1817, de Forbin set out at the head of a delegation to the East in order to purchase antiquities for the museum (including a statue of the goddess Sekhmet that is on exhibit at the Louvre). The delegation included, among others, an engineer, a cartographer, and painters.

Thirty-four photographs by the photographer Ya'akov Ben-Dov (Jacob Bendov), founder of the Bezalel photography department. Jerusalem, Tiberias, Safed, Hebron, Migdal and other locations, [ca. 1900s-1910s].
The photographs portray, among others: Boris Schatz with a class of students during a trip to the Jerusalem mountains; Ya'akov Eisenberg, Zohara Schatz and two students painting tiles in the Bezalel ceramics workshop (In the background appears a ceramic tile picture after an illustration by Ze'ev Raban for the Song of Songs); Jews praying at the Western Wall on the holiday of Succoth, one of them performing "Netilat Lulav"; Tomb of Absalom, Tomb of Zechariah and Tomb of Benei Hezir near Jerusalem; Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock; Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron; Grave of Rambam in Tiberias; main street in Rishon LeZion; Migdal (seven photographs, including two photographs of the founder of Migdal Moshe Glikin and a photo-montage – Lord Melchett stands, seemingly, on the roadside); Ze'ev Jabotinsky surrounded by guards in Acre prison; and more.
Two photographs are signed in the plate: "Y. Ben-Dov, Bezalel, Jerusalem" and three are titled. 10 photographs are stamped on verso with the photographer's stamp.

Prayers in honor of the English Royal family, inauguration of synagogues, eulogies, appointment of rabbis, various wars, including the Crimean war, the Boer War, World War I and World War II and other events. Some of the prayers were composed for private occasions. Among the booklets: a prayer on the occasion of laying the corner stone for the West London Synagogue, 1848; "Order of service … on the occasion of making collections for the Metropolitan Hospital Sunday Fund" (1847); "A Prayer For Her Majesty's Force In The Soudan" (1885); "A Prayer 'For The Time When Thou Mayest Be Found'" (composed when World War I broke out, 1914); "Thanksgiving and Prayer… On The Signing Of The Treaty Of Peace between Nations…" (1919); "Prayer for convention of great nations in London, for peace and for limiting the construction of war ships" (1930); "Prayer and Intercession On Behalf of Our Brethern In Germany" (1933); "Praise And Thanksgiving For The Victories Of The Allied Nation in the World War" (1945); "Order of prayer for the consecration of the Temporary Synagogue on the site of the destroyed Great Synagogue Duke's Place, London" (a prayer composed for the inauguration of the temporary synagogue replacing the mentioned synagogue following its destruction in World War II); "Rejoicing and Thanksgiving on the occasion of the celebration of Israel's Independence day"; and more.

Eight contribution cards (Beitragskarte), with stamps given for contributions to the "Central Welfare Agency for German Jews" (Zentralwohlfahrtsstelle der Deutschen Juden) – a welfare agency for German Jews under Nazi regime. Germany, ca. 1934-1939. German.
Eight blue paperboard cards, folded in half. On the outer side of the cards are an illustration of a Star of David, the title "Für Hilfe und Aufbau" [for aid and rehabilitation], and other details (the names of the receivers were added by hand). Printed on some of the cards is an inscription indicating that they were issued by the Berlin Jewish community, and on a number of cards appear ink-stamps of Jewish welfare agencies in Breslau (Jud. Wohlfahrtsamt Breslau) and in Munich (Wohlfahrtsant der Israelitischen kultusgemeinde Munchen).
Twelve stamps, in different values, are pasted on the inside of each card – for each month during which the contribution for the "Central Welfare Agency for German Jews" was received. Colorful illustrations are printed on the stamps, most of them depicting Jewish themes: Symbols of the Twelve Tribes; Jewish ceremonial objects; holidays, ceremonies and customs (a Jewish wedding, prayer at the Western Wall, lighting Shabbath candles and a Purim dinner); biblical figures and more.
Such cards were distributed by the "Central Welfare Agency for German Jews" as of 1934, for funds donated through the agency. The donations were used for assisting German Jews who lost their means to earn a living or were affected in a different manner by Nazi authorities.

Eight edicts issued by the king of Sweden (Kunglig Majestät - King in Council) permitting Jews to settle in Sweden, and listing their rights and limitations. Stockholm: Kongl. Tryckeriet, 1782-1815. Swedish.
In 1782, about a century after the Jews had been expelled from Sweden, King Gustav III issued an edict allowing Jews to return and live in three cities: Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Norrköping. This was the beginning of the Jewish community in Sweden, the largest of the Jewish communities in Scandinavia, which exists to this day. These edicts, published in the decades close to the Jews' arrival to Sweden, document their lives, rights and limitations at that early period.
Among the edicts: edict from May 27, 1782, allowing Jews to return to settle in Sweden for the first time in a century; an edict from May 6, 1790, forbidding Jews to trade in silver or gold; edict dated February 8, 1802, forbidding Jews and Italians to travel throughout the kingdom on business without special permission; edict dated July 13, 1807, concerning study and services for Jews involved in retail or wholesale commerce; edict dated August 31, 1815, forbidding additional Jews to settle in the kingdom, except for special cases. J'Accuse ...! Lettre au Président de la République [I Accuse…! Letter to the President of the Republic], by Émile Zola. In: Issue 87 of the newspaper L'Aurore. Paris, January 13, 1898. French.
Émile Zola's famous essay in defense of Alfred Dreyfus – an open letter to the President of France, in which Zola accuses the leaders of the army, the Ministry of War and the Martial Court of travesty of justice. The letter's publication caused an uproar in France. Zola was sued for libel, sentenced to a year in prison and was forced to flee to England.
Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), a Jewish officer in the French army, was convicted of treason, though entirely innocent. The suspicion of falsified evidence, false witness statements and a wrongful conviction ignited an unprecedented public debate in France, later called the "Dreyfus Affair". Émile Zola's open letter, "J'Accuse", is considered the most famous text written in the course of the affair. Its title became synonymous with protest against injustice and governmental corruption.

Des Herrn Herzogs Maximillian in Bayern, nach Nubien, Äegypten, Palaestina, Syrien und Malta im Jahre 1838 [Painted views from the Orient, gathered during the journey of Maximillian, Duke in Bavaria, to Nubia, Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Malta in 1838]. [Germany and France, 1839-1840]. German and French.
A portfolio with 45 (out of 60) hand-colored lithographs of the orient's views and antiquities, after paintings by Heinrich von Mayr. The publication of the portfolio was initiated by the Bavarian duke Maximillian Joseph who traveled through the Middle East in 1838. Mayr accompanied the duke and painted the views and scenes in the different countries which they visited.
The lithographs depict, among others, Egyptian antiquities, sites in Palestine, in Syria and Lebanon and the city of Valletta in Malta. Among the lithographs from Palestine: a street in Jerusalem, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Valley of Josaphat, Mary's grave, Mary's spring in Nazareth, the Jordan river and more.
The portfolio also includes ten leaves of text, with detailed captions in German and French, and a title page - a hand-colored lithograph.

Approximately 125 drafts, written by hand, typewritten or written on galley proofs, for decrees issued by Dov Yosef as governor of Jerusalem during the Israeli War of Independence. Jerusalem, [1948-1949]. Hebrew (one item in English).
The drafts in this collection are from various stages of editing (some are written on notes and some are typewritten and stapled as booklets), and they record the work done by Yosef during the war, the procedure of wording laws, and life in besieged Jerusalem. Among them: thirteen drafts for Order no. 1, announcing that Dov Yosef is the Governor and that Jerusalem and its inhabitants are under his command; eleven drafts to Order no. 2, that includes the "held area" in Jerusalem in the zone of the State of Israel; dozens of galley proofs of the compilation "Decrees, orders and notices", with comments and additions handwritten by Yosef; drafts for decrees concerning annexation of neighborhoods occupied by IDF, abandoned property, supervision of food supply, limitations on residential rent, curfew on neighborhoods on the border, cancellation of claims against the administration and its representatives, and other subjects.
Dov (Bernard) Yosef (1899-1980), jurist and minister in Israeli governments, born in Montreal. On August 2, 1948 he was appointed military governor of Jerusalem and was in charge of its civil, economic and military matters. Yosef became governor when the city was besieged, with its destiny pending, and saw himself being responsible for supporting the citizens and strengthening Jerusalem's status as the capital of Israel. In his book "Kirya Ne'emana…1948" (Schocken, 1960), Yosef told about his feelings when he undertook this mission: "Most of my life I sat in Jerusalem… at that moment I felt the wings of providence, and I was praying for success in this crucial position imposed on me" (Hebrew).

Christian van Adrichem (1533-1585) – Catholic priest, born in Delft (Holland), wrote a number of works on Palestine. This book is a comprehensive description of the Holy Land, accompanied by twelve engraved plates. Engravings include: maps of the tribal territories, a large map (folded) of Palestine and a large map (folded) of Jerusalem.

1-16. Sixteen photographs reflecting the different facets of Jewish settlement and activity in Palestine during the first decades of the 20th century: laborers in an orchard, a Purim party at a kindergarten in Tel Aviv, Lord Balfour and his entourage in Tel Aviv , swamp drainage in the Jezreel Valley, tobacco farming at Ben Shemen, work on a dairy farm in a Jewish settlement (apparently Beit Alpha), a plantation and a beehive in Kibbutz Geva, the Roaring Lion monument at Tel Hai and more.
17-30. Fourteen portraits of women, men and children photographed in a studio. Most are divided on verso to be used as postcards, with dedications on verso of some. One of the photographs is signed by the subject ("Prof. A Schor").
26 of the photographs are stamped (most with embossed stamps. Others are stamped on verso. Some have printed labels on the cards on which they are mounted). Three of the photographs are stamped on verso with the stamp of the "Agricultural Museum of the Zionist Organization, Jerusalem" (the museum operated in Jerusalem in the years 1920-1927). In some cases, details were added by hand in the negative or on the photographs.
Avraham Soskin (1881-1963) was born in Russia and immigrated to Palestine in 1905. He settled in the German colony in Jaffa and opened the "Photographia Progress" photography studio together with G. Bruck. In 1914 Soskin moved to 24 Herzl St., where the second floor served as both a photography studio and a home for his family and himself; at this studio, called "Photographia A. Soskin", he worked for 19 years, until 1933 (the year the studio was closed). Soskin, known as the "Photographer of Tel Aviv", was among the most important photographers active in Palestine during the Yishuv period. He is unique in the abundance of photographs he took documenting the first two decades of the first Hebrew city.

Jerusalem Design, God is in the Details, Illustrated Guide by David Kroyanker. Jerusalem: Jerusalem Design Heritage Publication, 2016. English. Four volumes. Limited edition of 50 copies.
This four-volume work deals with Jerusalem design, with particular focus on various architectonic details. The book’s four volumes contain hundreds of terms and more than three thousand photographs and illustrations. The first three volumes deal with architectonic details that come from the three faiths that left their mark on Jerusalem – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The fourth part deals with the city’s modern design during the twentieth century.
The book is the result of many years of research by architect David Kroyanker (b. 1939), who spent many years engaged in the architectonic-historical documentation of Jerusalem’s architecture, the development of Jerusalem, and the preservation of neighborhoods and buildings in the city.
Copy no. 17 of an edition of 50 copies. Each volume is numbered and signed by the author. At the end of each volume is an envelope with a paper cut designed in accordance with the subject of the volume.

A letter handwritten and hand-signed by Émile Zola. [London], February 16, 1899. French.
In this letter, written in one of the most sorrowful times of his stay in London, Zola expresses his wish to retire from the company of people and acquaintances: "Dear friend, you did the right thing by refusing to give my address to Mr. Graham. I want to see nobody. Those who turn to you, for whatever reason, send them away. Keep silent. I am less than ever in a mood for disturbances" (the mentioned visitor, presumably, is William Graham who was sent to set a meeting with Zola on behalf of Rachel Sassoon Beer, editor of The Observer newspaper).
Further on, Zola asks to postpone the visit of his close friend Andrew Chatto, the main publisher of his books in England: "As for Chatto and his colleague, I shall be pleased to see them, but currently my wife suffers very much and I myself am in a quite bad state, so we will be very depressing hosts. Let us postpone the visit to a later time and you apologize in my name".
The reasons for his distress are not detailed in the letter. However, in another letter sent by Zola to Jeanne Rozerot on the same day, he expresses the sense that "lies and evil gained a victory", the difficulty to go on with his literary work and the growing distress in his personal life.
The letter is signed "Z", and the recipient is, probably, the English author and journalist Ernest Alfred Vizetelly, who was often in touch with Zola while he stayed in London.
The French author and publicist Émile Zola (1840-1902) was one of the principal supporters of Alfred Dreyfus when the latter was accused, in 1895, of treason and espionage for Germany. In 1897 Zola published a series of essays in Dreyfus's defense, and in 1898 the newspaper "L'Aurore" published his essay "J'Accuse" – an open letter to the French president, in which Zola accused the leaders of the military, the War Ministry and the military tribunal of a miscarriage of justice. The letter's publication aroused controversy in France. Zola was sued for libel, sentenced to a year in prison and forced to flee to England. He stayed in London for about a year, with the support of friends and acquaintances. He lived in hiding under false names (this is why he did not sign this letter with his full name) until he learned that Dreyfus was to be retried. Zola returned to Paris in June 1899.
On the back of the letter appear two drawings in pencil: a figure wearing a judge's cloak and wig, and an illustration of a hall with seats (the court?).

"History of the Rites of the Jews" was written by Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh of Modena at the request of the English Ambassador in Venice on behalf of James I, King of England. Having gained success, the book was translated into several languages (including French, English and Hebrew) and used for years as an important source of information about the daily customs of the Jewish people.

Approximately 60 documents, letters and paper items, which belonged to the secretary of Ferramonti di Tarsia Displace Persons Camp, Philipp Kanner. 1944-1945 (a number of items are from 1943). German, English and Polish.
• A notebook with duplicates of 56 notices handwritten by Kanner to the Welfare Committee of the camp: orders of food, maintenance instructions, notices from the camp's police, Kashrut, dwelling, and other notices. Most notes are signed by Kanner and a small part is signed by the camp commander (Jan Hermann?).
• Eighteen letters and drafts, written by hand and typewritten, sent to and by Kanner. Among them: a long and interesting letter by Kanner to one of the camp's officers, informing him that he intends to retire from his post. The letter brings a detailed report about the camp, failures of management, sanitation, deserting interns, state of inmates, and other subjects (two copies); a letter to the camp's commander, referring to the growing black market, to rising prices of products, and the urgent need to raise the inmates allowance; a formal letter of complaint to the commander of the camp's police, submitted by Kanner, following an attack by one of the inmates; and more.
• More than forty documents and various paper items, printed and handwritten, documenting the management of the camp. Among them: list of rules and regulations for the camp's inmates; invoices, various lists of camp's inmates (some are classified according to countries of origin, age and sex); lists of food rations; and more.
The Italian concentration camp Ferramonti di Tarsia was the largest among concentration camps established by Benito Mussolini in the summer of 1940. Most prisoners were Jewish. In September 1943, a few days before Italy surrendered to the Allied Forces, the prisoners were released. Many of the inmates stayed in the camp and it served as a Displaced Persons Camp until its closure in December 1945.

Some 190 photographs that belonged to Malka (Tavlinsky) Butler, a kindergarten teacher at the "Jalduth" Zionist shelter in Bialistok. Bialistok and Palestine, ca. 1920s to early 1930s.
The photographs are mostly mounted on thick paper leaves. They include about 30 photos of the "Jalduth" Zionist shelter in Bialistok: children in Hanukkah costumes, Purim spiels, class outings, bathing in a lake, children in the dining hall, an art room, the staff and other scenes. In addition the collection contains family photographs, portraits and some photos taken after Butler's immigration to Israel (the Tel Aviv beach, photos from Tel Hai, archeological sites, camel riding and other photos).
Five photos are dedicated in handwriting on verso (in Hebrew and Yiddish). On verso of one photo is the shelter's ink stamp ("Jalduth Zionist Shelter in Bialistok" – "Ochronka Sjonistyczna w Bialystoku"), and on the verso of another photo is an ink stamp in Yiddish: "Photographia Soloveichik un Sohn, Bialistok". Some of the photos appear in multiple copies.
Enclosed: "Certificate of Appreciation", handwritten on a paper sheet, granted to Malka Tavlinky from the parents of the children at the shelter on the occasion of her immigration to Palestine; marriage contract (ketubah) for Malka's wedding, held in Tel Aviv on December 14, 1928; certificate attesting to the choice of a new name from the Interior Ministry of the State of Israel, from 1964; notice of mourning upon Malka's death, from January 6, 1970.
Size and condition vary. Average size: approx. 8.5X13.5 cm. Most photos are mounted on 20 thick paper leaves (from an album). Good-fair overall condition. Stains, peeling and blemishes. A number of photos are in fair-poor condition, with tears or open tears.
22 ink-drawings on paper by Samuel Ovadiahu (1892-1963) – illustrations for children's books. [ca. late 1920s to late 1940s].
1-15. Fifteen drawings for the book "Nissan" by Benzion Raskin (published by B. Barlevi, ).
The illustrations depict scenes from nature, the holiday of Passover and the Exodus from Egypt.
16-22. Seven illustrations for a children's book. Apparently, the illustrations were for the book "Aviv Ziv" by Benzion Raskin – a story about a snake, a fox, a rabbit and a robin, published by B. Barlevi in the 1940s.
The drawings are numbered in pencil. On some of the drawings appear titles and printing instructions.
Samuel Ovadiahu (Ovodovsky, 1892-1963) was born in Ukraine, studied and worked in Germany and Poland and immigrated to Palestine in 1942. Ovadiahu painted realistic landscapes in oil, and was the first winner of the Dizengoff Prize for landscape painting.
Average size: 23X29.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains. Creases. Tears and open tears at margins of leaves, not affecting the drawings.

Collection of paper items, handwritten and printed, from the estate of the Israeli diplomat Abba Eban. Late 1940s-1990s. English and some Hebrew.
• Dozens of printed and handwritten drafts, for speeches, lectures and essays composed by Eban. Among them: declaration delivered to the UN security council on May 28, 1948 (a fortnight after the establishment of the State of Israel), concerning a proposal for cease fire in the Independence War; another declaration delivered to the UN security council dated July 14, 1948, regarding the battles of the ten days and the call to cease fire; draft of a speech, composed, most probably, shortly after the Yom Kippur War, calling to use the "Historic Opportunity" and start negotiations with the Arabs; as well as essays about the peace process, Gaza and the West Bank, strategies of negotiations and bargaining, the borders of Israel, the peace process, Jewish history and other subjects.
Some of the drafts encompass dozens of pages, and in many of them appear comments, additions and deletions by hand.
• Manuscript, printed and spiral-bound, of a book titled "Reflections on the New Diplomacy" by Eban (apparently the book was eventually published under the title "Diplomacy for the Next Century" by Yale University Press, New Haven, 1998).
• Fifteen books, most of them with signatures and dedications to and from Eban and a minority with handwritten comments (on notes attached to leaves). Among the books: A New Spirit, A New Commitment, A New America, by US President Jimmy Carter. A copy inscribed by the author; "The Temple Mount is in our Hands!" by Chief of Staff Mota Gur. A copy inscribed by the author; Jacques Lipchitz, His Sculpture, monograph of the sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, with a dedication in his handwriting; and more.
• Other paper items, including five booklets with Eban's speeches, a postal envelope in honor of "The peace treaty Israel-Egypt, March 26, 1979"; a typewritten draft – a complete English translation by Eban of the play "Oedipus the King" by Sophocles; and more.
Enclosed: a vinyl record, painted in gold, with a plaque with Israel's emblem, the UN emblem and the inscription "A Recording of the Vote on Israel Admission to the United Nations".

68 photographs in an album of the Solel Boneh Company and 21 assorted photographs by photographer Zechariah Kottler. Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Beersheva, Tiberias and elsewhere, [ca. 1920s].
1. "Solel Boneh", album with 68 photographs documenting the construction of historical buildings, road construction and manual labor in the 1920s in Palestine. The photographs show, among other things: the construction of the National Library on Mount Scopus; the construction of the Arza sanatorium near Jerusalem; paving of Herzl Street in Tel Aviv; paving of Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv; construction of the Bialik House in Tel Aviv; paving of the Nes Ziona-Rehovot highway; workers at the Dror cooperative carpentry workshop in Tel Aviv; the power plant in Haifa; the power plant in Tiberias; construction of the "big hut" in Degania Alef; the military cemetery in Beersheva; as well as quarries, engineering machines, workers and more. On the first pages are photographs of three diagrams drawn by hand. Attached to the binding is a card with a photomontage – structures cut out to form the Hebrew words "Solel Boneh".
2. 21 photographs of sites and figures in Palestine, including: the Old City in Jerusalem; the Tomb of Absalom; interior of Rachel's Tomb; Caesarea; portraits of Jews of various ethnic extractions; and more.
All the photographs are signed in the plate: "Z. Kottler Press, Jerusalem". Nineteen of the assorted photographs are mounted on cardboard boards, with an additional (identical) stamp. In addition, three of the assorted photographs are signed in the hand of Zechariah Kottler, on the cardboard boards (in pencil).
Guy Raz writes about Zechariah Kottler in his book "The Photographers of Palestine" (Mapa, 2003): "Zechariah Kottler was active in Jerusalem, as attested by the stamp that appears on his pictures. In the years 1921-1924 he was the photographer of the Solel Boneh Company. Kottler's works appear in an album published by the company, most are 15X10 cm in brown / blue / black hues. These works display the photographer's professional and aesthetic use of light".
